Located in the North Central province, the city of Polonnaruwa dates back to Sri Lanaka’s resplendent past. Weligama is well known for its beeralu lace making, a striking form of crochet first introduced by the Portuguese in the 16th century, and is still being made by local households today. This area is also famous for its distinct ‘stilt fishermen’, who sit on a single pole perched on a cross bar and catch small fish.

The best time to visit Wilpattu is from May until September, when the animals come out to drink and bathe in the lakes in the drier months.
