Weligama is well known for its beeralu lace making, a striking form of crochet first introduced by the Portuguese in the 16th century, and is still being made by local households today. This area is also famous for its distinct ‘stilt fishermen’, who sit on a single pole perched on a cross bar and catch small fish.

Wilpattu National Park is located on the northwest coast of Sri Lanka. The name Wilpattu is derived from the word ‘willupattu’ translating to ‘Land of Lakes’. As the name suggests, Wilpattu National Park has a plethora of lakes. Known for its temperate climate, open scrublands, wetlands, wooded forests, and thick jungle, the park has an impressive array of wildlife to spot, including elephants, leopards, mugger crocodiles, Sri Lankan sloth bears, axis deer and over 200 species of birds. The best time to visit Wilpattu is from May until September, when the animals come out to drink and bathe in the lakes in the drier months.
